Workflow design. Save and resume capabilities because interruptions are constant. Offline functionality because connectivity is unreliable. Auto-save because batteries die and phones get dropped.

Notification design. Not everything can buzz on a phone. Critical alerts need to cut through the noise. Routine updates can wait. The notification hierarchy must match field priorities.

A Field Example

A field inspection app required inspectors to type detailed findings for each item. In the office, this took reasonable time. In the field, with gloves, sun glare, and time pressure, inspectors were spending more time on the app than on the actual inspection.

The redesigned version used voice-to-text for findings, pre-populated common issues as selectable options, and added photo annotation. Inspection quality went up while time spent on the app went down by 60%.
